View of Toledo
It is one of the two surviving landscape paintings by El Greco. Landscape paintings were banned in Spain during the time so View of Toledo is also considered as the first Spanish landscape painting.
It is considered as one of the best depictions of the sky in Western art
The painting is not an accurate representation of Toledo. El Greco took liberties with the structures in the painting to include the cathedral which was not visible from the chosen perspective.

More about The View of Toledo
The View of Toledo is often compared to Giorgone’s The Tempest due to its dark portrayal of the sky. The menacing clouds over the city immediately grab the attention of the viewer away from the green hills on the foreground. This painting seeks to capture the essence of the city rather than its actual appearance. It features the Alcazar and the cathedral on top of the hill on the right, the Alcantara bridge in the middle and the Castle of San Servando on the left.
This painting was in El Greco’s studio at the time of his death. It is currently located at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It is part of the Havemeyer Collection which was handed down to the museum in 1929.

American Gothic
0 out of 5Popular cultural icon and, frankly, a hugely entertaining painting.
It won a prize at the Art Institute of Chicago, was bought by the museum, and still hangs there today
There is a lot of symbolism in the painting, from the hayfork to the expressions to the plants on the porch (a geranium and a mother-in-laws tongue)Select optionsQuick View -

Saturn Devouring His Son
0 out of 5As one of the fourteen in Goya’s Black Paintings (paintings directly created onto the walls of the artist’s home sometime between 1819 and 1823), it is a great piece to own since the artist himself did not intend to show these paintings to the public.

Saturn Devouring His Son is a great conversation piece because it can be interpreted in various ways – both political and personal.Select optionsQuick View
