More about View from Mount Holyoke Northampton Massachusetts after a Thunderstorm – The Oxbow
Known as The Oxbow, this painting was the determining landscape painting of Thomas Cole. It shows a romantic view of the Connecticut River Valley after a thunderstorm. There’s also a tiny self-portrait of the artist sitting in the foreground with an easel.
The artist painstakingly sketched this work (en plein air) before painting it in his studio. Many have interpreted it as the conflict between civilization and wilderness. Cole showed these opposing sides – how civilization can destroy the natural beauty of the wilderness.
Sketchbook drawings with annotations, as well as related oil sketches of The Oxbow exist. Other artists have also imitated or copied this painting.
The painting is currently located at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Company of Painters is not involved in reselling. We are artists ourselves and have our own studios. All our artists have over 15 years' experience in reproducing oil paintings.
