The lack of depth in the painting was by choice; Klimt felt if brought on the golden opulence of the piece.

This was painted just after his Vienna Ceiling series that was labeled by some as pornographic, a controversy led to Klimt saying “If you can not please everyone with your deeds and your art, please a few”. The Kiss, however, found a buyer straight away – in fact, before it was even completed – for the record amount of 25,000 crowns (equivalent to $240,000 today). This was way in excess of the previous record of 500 crowns, proving that all publicity is good publicity!

(Interestingly, the three Vienna Ceiling paintings would later be destroyed by the Nazis as they fled Vienna. Perhaps they shared the opinion that the paintings were “perverted excess”).

The Kiss is considered to be Gustav Klimt’s most popular painting and a masterpiece of the early modern period. It is now in the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere museum in the Belvedere palace, Vienna.
