– This is one of the first works that Tissot painted upon arriving in London. He had less than one hundred francs when he arrived and the first few paintings were his attempts to rebuild his career.
– The costumes and the narrative of this work were intended to appeal to the British public. Due to the popularity of this piece, it was reproduced as an engraving by John Ballin.

More About The Farewell
Tissot painted many scenes of contemporary urban life in Paris and London. Migration was one of the themes he explored in his works. In this work, a man and a woman hold hands through the bars of a fence as they say their goodbyes. The melancholic atmosphere of the painting is highlighted by the dark colors in their dresses and other objects in the background. The painting is now on display at the Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery.
