The Athenaeum is Stuart’s most popular work which uses the likeness of George Washington. He has painted numerous portraits of Washington, but he decided not to finish this one. However, he kept the original version to help him make reproductions and sold them for $100 each.

Stuart seemed to be fascinated by Washington and his features. Although he never painted him with any exterior gear or crest to identify his rank, the artist always painted Washington as a dignified and composed elder statesman.

However, Washington was not impressed with the artist’s libertine ways and he treated him coldly. Despite the artist’s aloof and authoritative interpretation of Washington, he was able to create his iconic image renowned by generations of Americans.

The painting is part of the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
