The child wearing a sailor’s suit in the portrait is Henri Bernstein who grew up to be a popular playwright in France. Marcel Bernstein, Henri’s father was a friend of Manet. Marcel and his cousin Charles Ephrussi were regular visitors to Manet’s studio in the late 1870s, and Marcel once owned Manet’s Monk in Prayer before he exchanged it for a landscape by Daubigny. Henry Bernstein also owned a painting by Manet called “On the Bench”.
