More about Haystacks, Autumn
Haystacks is one of a series of paintings by Millet that depicts the four seasons.  It was commissioned by an Alsatian industrialist named Frederic Hartmann.  It shows grazing sheep on a farm in front of three big haystacks.  Beyond the haystacks, we can see the plain of Chailly and the rooftops of Barbizon as dark clouds begin to form.  The painting is now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
