Going to Work depicts a swarm of workers in the snow outside the entrance to the Park Works of the Mather & Platt engineering firm in Manchester.  Industrial scenes like this one are common in Lowry’s work.  The painting was commissioned by the War Artists Advisory Committee.  It is a part of the collection of Imperial War Museums in London.
