It is part of a series of paintings in which Kandinsky attempts to explore the relationship between music and art.
Kandinsky considered Composition 8 as a high point in his post war achievements. It was his first major work to enter Solomon R. Guggenheim’s collection.
In contrast to objective art, Kandinsky uses shapes and colors to evoke emotions within the viewer.

More about Composition 8

Painted nearly a decade after Composition VII, Composition VIII shifted the focus from color to form. This painting emphasizes geometric shapes which diverge from the apocalyptic themes of the previous paintings in the series. Dominant in the upper left corner is a concentric circle. Various shapes resembling mountains, roads, sun, and clouds are also present in the painting.

This artwork was painted while he was teaching at Bauhaus – a school of art, architecture and design in Germany. It is on display at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, USA.
