Cathedrale de Rouen
$189.00 – $2,692.00
This painting is part of a series of paintings to highlight the effects of light on a particular subject. It is Monet’s most exhaustive series of paintings about a single subject.
The series of paintings were viewed and praised by fellow painters Camille Pissarro and Paul Cézanne while it was on exhibit.
Monet encountered difficulty painting the subject due to the complexity of the motif and the light. These complications eventually gave him nightmares.

More about The Rouen Cathedral
Prior to painting the Rouen Cathedral, Monet focused mainly on landscapes. This is Monet’s first painting to focus on a building. In order to get a good view, Monet rented an apartment on the second floor of a building across the cathedral. To paint the 30 different views of the cathedral, he had to move from one canvas to another as the day progressed.
When the series was completed, twenty paintings were displayed sequentially from dawn to dusk in Durand-Ruel’s gallery in 1895. This series of paintings was designed to be exhibited together but the paintings were sold separately to different collectors.
