More About Apollo and Daphne
This work by John William Waterhouse was inspired by a story from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. When Apollo insulted Eros’ ability to shoot arrows, Eros responded by shooting Daphne with a lead arrow to incite hatred and shooting Apollo with a golden one to incite love. Apollo fell in love and chased after Daphne. Daphne ran from him and asked for help from his father Peneus. To keep Daphne from Apollo, Peneus turned her into a laurel tree. Mournful for the loss of Daphne, Apollo claimed the tree as his and adorned himself with its leaves. John William Waterhouse captured the moment just as Daphne is turning into a laurel tree.
