Adele Bloch-Bauer was Klimt’s patron and very important to the artist. In fact, this painting, along with the obviously-named “Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I” both feature her, only person to appear in more than one Klimt painting. This is the less famous of the two paintings, which were part of five pieces returned to Maria Altmann after long legal action as outlined here.

The owner of the painting, who has managed to keep his/her identity a secret, lent it to Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2014, on a long-term basis.
