Although it wasn’t popular when first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1821, it is now one of the most loved paintings in Britain, second only to J.M.W. Turner’s The Fighting Temeraire.
It caused a sensation in France when it was exhibited at the Salon in 1824. It was awarded with a gold medal by Charles X of France.
While none of the trees on the painting exists today, Willy Lott’s Cottage survives. The cottage is located downstream from Flatford Mill.
