Doctor Samuel D. Gross is depicted here performing an operation with other surgeons. Thomas Eakins can also be seen in the audience to the right of the railing, either sketching or writing. The painting was rejected by the art jury for Centennial exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876 due to its subject matter. The painting is now at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
