More about Las Meninas
The painting shows a slice of life in the court of King Philip IV of Spain. The artist has painted himself into the painting, working on a portrait, and looking towards the viewer. Another interesting detail is the reflection in the mirror of the king and queen, and it remains unclear whether the reflection is showing them to be standing in the same spot as the viewer, or if it is a reflection of the painting on which Diego is working.
Other detail includes the queens chamberlain (back right) and possible relative of the artist. The more you look, the more you will see.
Diego Velázquez is regarded as the leading artist of the Spanish Golden age, and this his most impressive and important work. It hangs in the Museo Nacional Del Prado.

The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp
0 out of 5The scene depicts Dr. Nicolaes Tulp explaining the muscles of the arm in a glimpse of early modern medicine
Anatomy lessons were quite fashionable at the time. The body would have belonged to a criminal, and public dissections took place once a year at the Amsterdam Guild of Surgeons
The detail and expressions are captivating. It reminds of a modern photo, and in fact the people in the painting probably paid to be included in the selfie (with the exception of the corpse, of course )Select optionsQuick View
