Dutch Proverbs
The painting depicts literal illustrations of more than 100 Dutch proverbs.
Bruegel’s work illustrates the absurdity, wickedness, and foolishness of people.
The son of the painter made 16 copies of the painting with minor differences from the original.
While Bruegel had already painted several minor paintings about proverbs, this was the first large-scale painting on the subject.

More about The Dutch Proverbs
The style of the painting is reminiscent of Hieronymous Bosch which combines detailed landscapes with illustrations of moral and religious concepts. Bruegel hides the proverbs in buildings and landscapes while showing a remarkable view of the town. While some of the proverbs depicted in the painting have faded from use, some are still in use today.
The painting is currently located in Gemäldegalerie, Berlin. View the painting with annotations here: http://bruegel.analog.is/

This is also a great conversation piece because there are numerous symbolic objects worth deciphering within the painting.
