Carnival Evening 1886
A mysterious painting in that the main figures being highlighted in the art work are very much in contrast to their dark and dreary background. Looking at the painting, it would seem like the characters are actually shining from within instead of reflecting the light coming from the moon.
It is among Rousseaus many paintings that feature fantastic scenes that appealed to many collectors and artists, including Pablo Picasso.
An oddly moving piece that grabs the attention of the audience.

More About Carnival Evening
There seems to be a lot of contradicting elements in Rousseau’s Carnival Evening. Although the figures in the artwork are shown to be wearing carnival outfits – the man looking almost like a clown and the woman wearing a dress and a cone shaped hat – the mood brought about by the hardly visible faces, the color of the sky and the barren trees provide an air of mystery and sadness. A closer look at the painting will also show a mysterious face looking out from the empty hut near the two main figures as well as an unexpected street lamp.
Many critics are not sure how to accept the painting since it features brightly colored strange characters in the middle of a dark, dreary area. However, it does offer a very beautiful scene, which has captured the attention of many collectors and artists.
Rousseau’s Carnival Evening can be found on display at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
