Belshazzar’s Feast
A Rembrandt is a must-have in any personal collection – he was one of the greatest painters and printmakers in Europe, and the most significant in Dutch history.
If you love detailed paintings, Belshazzar’s Feast is a great example. The artist used distinctive features on the main character – from his gold and silver costume, to the chains and turban as adornments. The supporting characters lack the same extravagance, but the details on their clothing and headpieces and the objects on the table contribute to the story.
This a great conversation piece especially among art lovers who are fascinated by paintings that tell a story and convey emotions.

More about Belshazzar’s Feast
The painting tells the story of Belshazzar the son of Nebuchadnezzar. The scene was based on the Book of Daniel were he gave a grand feast to thousands of his lords. As he drank wine, he demanded the gold and silver vessels his father had taken from a temple in Jerusalem. As they drank and praise the gods of silver, gold, and other material things in the world, God’s hand appeared and wrote over against the candlestick on the wall which prophesised his downfall.
The painting distinguishes the gesture and expression of Belshazzar. He was bewildered and transfixed on the ‘writings on the wall’. The other characters seem to have the same expression except for the woman whose face is not shown on the painting.
This painting represents the swift downfall of a king whose thirst for power and material wealth cannot save him from God’s judgment. It also shows the unusual detailing of the artist on this specific painting. Visit this page to know more about the painting.
Belshazzar’s Feast can be found at the National Gallery, London.
