The influence of 15th century Flemish and German artists are evident in this painting. During his trips to Europe, he studied many styles of paintings but it was the work of Jan van Eyck that made a strong impression on him.
Although Wood did not attempt to depict the historic scene accurately, he intended to preserve the American folklore to forge a national identity through art and history.
